As a scavenger in a highly wasteful society, we employ found objects from back alleys and other dumping grounds, domestic, commercial and industrial. We recycle these items into puppets, stages and costumes, transforming trash into treasure. Puppetry also presents interesting metaphors for the problem of free will and subject/ object distinction: we are moved by forces outside of our control, yet maintain a sense of personal identity. In puppetry, objects become subjects and we are prompted to consider a mystery; what forces pull the strings behind our own sense of subjectivity? Wryly Andherson has been a puppeteer since 2003.
