Bio:
Louise Francis-Smith, Vancouver Artist and Photographer. Born and raised in New Zealand. Settled in Strathcona in 1980. Louise is continually capturing the downtown eastside and Strathcona . Upcoming Exhibit 2011 Cultural Crawl at the old garlic 'Factory' studio, will show recent photographs taken in the Downtown Eastside. Focusing on architecture and buildings, being witness to the physical transformation occurring, the photos reflect and uncover layers of historical, economic and political undercurrents. The images speak loudly, mostly because they are not mediated by language and they allow one to be faced with the complexities in an unadulterated form. In the midst of the vulnerable, the neglected, addicted, derelict and depressed, the vitality that once existed in the DTES is no longer existent. All Photographs are Archival Ink Jets and Archival Mats with Edition Limit of 15. Radha at 728 Main St, has an exhibit of her photographs, Strathcona, 30 years ago, and Chinatown, the spontaneous spirit of daily life. These are part of the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival.
