Within painting, I am intrested in colour, tactile surfaces, pattern and how paint behaves on a given surface. I have always been fascinated by tactile surfaces and soon discovered the cracked surface. By cracking tile grout on linen I weave by hand and layering saturated colour washes over and over again, I hope to engage the viewer, and transfer an energy from the making itself into a tangible new form of expressive sensation. My current work shows strong vertical lines where I have cut and pieced together woven, linen fabric sometimes cracked and uncracked. The vertical lines remind me of waterlines on rock surfaces during kayaking trips close to the shoreline. I have been experimenting with this method creating a contrast between cracked and smooth surfaces as well as experimenting with contrasting colour combinations. My work was chosen for this years' Eastside Culture Crawl Gold Sponsor Plaques. Seven pieces were produced and will be given as gifts to the Gold Sponsors of the Crawl. Thank you so much to the Eastside Culture Crawl Jury and Executive Director, Jeffrey Boone for this wonderful opportunity.
