Within painting, I am intrested in colour, tactile surfaces, pattern and how paint behaves on a given surface. I have always been fascinated by tactile surfaces and soon discovered the cracked surface. By cracking tile grout on linen I weave by hand and layering saturated colour washes over and over again, I hope to engage the viewer, and transfer an energy from the making itself into a tangible new form of expressive sensation. My current work shows strong vertical lines where I have cut and pieced together woven, linen fabric sometimes cracked and uncracked. The vertical lines remind me of waterlines on rock surfaces during kayaking trips close to the shoreline. I have been experimenting with this method creating a contrast between cracked and smooth surfaces as well as experimenting with contrasting colour combinations.
