Bio:
I think a painting is more like the real world if it's made out of the real world. -Robert Rauschenberg ............... Architectural Palimpsest: a phenomenon when older structures like city walls or buildings are either torn down or in a state of decay and a ghost or shadow of a previous building informs the present and remaining facade. By layering found material from my everyday world, then tearing or cutting into it, exposing what lies beneath, I examine the hidden histories of my city, Vancouver. I am interested in what was once there. My collages attempt an archeological dig into our past, to expose the truth of our present and find soul in the “city of glass.” With my collages, poetry, music, and book making, I hope to bring appreciation to what is so often overlooked. Jessie McNeil is currently in her 4th year at Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She creates most of her artwork in her Strathcona home, where she dreams of travel and plays the ukulele.
