Carylann is a self-taught painter. Well into her 5th year of practise she is exploring the relationship between subject + method: using both old + new creative techniques; in context she uses treatments similar to those used by the old masters. Glazing + varnishing the built up layers of paint, each piece taking approximately one year to complete. Distressing each piece by sanding + scratching the surface to give it history + character. Blending + softening its appearance and to bring out very small details. Combining these methods she produces a more contemporary effect. Her work is beautiful + tragic, with cheeky + playful undertones, these ghostly, ephemeral portraits are drawn from her vivid imagination, and her exploration of self.
